A Summer Scented with Adventure: My Internship at Lili Bermuda
When I embarked on my journey to Bermuda this summer, I had no idea that it would be an experience that would linger in my memory like the most enchanting of fragrances. After a whirlwind of two days traveling from Paris, through JFK, to the picturesque Islands of Bermuda, I arrived exhausted but brimming with excitement. The warm island breeze was a welcome change from the rainy skies of Ireland and the hustle of Versailles, where I had spent the last year completing my Master’s degree. And there, waiting with a radiant smile, was Isabelle Ramsay-Brackstone - the Master Perfumer of Lili Bermuda, ready to introduce me to a world of scents and a summer of unforgettable experiences.
A Swizzle of Bermudian Charm
My first day on the island was nothing short of magical. Isabelle welcomed me by taking me to the legendary Swizzle Inn, where I was immediately immersed in the lively and relaxed Bermudian atmosphere. Sipping on Bermuda's iconic cocktail, the Rum Swizzle, I felt the exhaustion from my travels melt away. The vibrant energy of the island was intoxicating, and I knew right away that this summer was going to be something special.
Sunsets and Fluffy Friends
Settling into my new home, I was greeted by the most breathtaking sunsets right from my bedroom window. Every evening, the sky would transform into a canvas of pinks, oranges, and purples, painting the island in hues that seemed too perfect to be real. And as if the sunsets weren’t enough, I had the company of two adorable, fluffy friends - Pecan Pie and Lala, who quickly became my companions in this island paradise. Their playful antics brought warmth to my days, making Bermuda feel even more like home.
The Charm of St. George’s
Each morning, I would make my way to the Town of St. George’s, where the Lili Bermuda Perfumery is nestled. St. George’s, with its cobblestone streets, colorful colonial buildings, and rich history, was like stepping back in time. The town’s charm was contagious, and I found myself falling in love with its quiet beauty. After a day of working with fragrances, I would unwind with a visit to Tobacco Bay, a secluded spot where the turquoise waters were as inviting as the island’s people. Exploring the Unfinished Church, with its open-air ruins and mysterious aura, was another favorite pastime. And of course, no day was complete without a stop at Wahoo’s for their famous fish tacos - an absolute must for any visitor.
A Journey into the World of Perfume
My work at Lili Bermuda was nothing short of a dream come true. I had the privilege of perfecting the art of fragrance workshops, where I led classes on perfume creation, teaching participants about the delicate balance of raw materials and the intricacies of scent. Each class was a unique experience, as I discovered how different people perceive fragrances and what combinations resonated with them. It was fascinating to see how a single note could evoke a memory or emotion, and I relished the opportunity to learn from the participants just as much as they learned from me.
Working alongside Isabelle, I delved deep into the creative process of perfume-
making. From brainstorming names and telling stories that authentically represented each fragrance, to evaluating scents and refining them until they were perfect, I gained an understanding of the art and science that goes into every bottle of perfume. One of my key projects was developing a regulatory strategy for safely transporting our fragrances to the U.S., as well as designing a “gift with purchase” that aligned seamlessly with our brand’s message. It was a crash course in the business of fragrance, and every challenge taught me something new.
Crafting the Lili Bermuda Brand
My summer wasn’t just about fragrances - it was also about branding. I worked on developing a cohesive brand strategy that included everything from working with designers on logo design to marketing materials, ensuring that every aspect of Lili Bermuda’s public face was in harmony with our vision. We also embarked on a social media rebranding campaign, revamping our online presence to better reflect the essence of our brand. Seeing the results of our hard work come to life was incredibly rewarding.
Immersed in Bermudian Culture
Beyond the perfumery, I had countless experiences that immersed me in Bermudian culture. One of the highlights was Cup Match, a vibrant, two-day celebration that brings the island to a standstill. Bermudians take their cricket seriously, and the energy and enthusiasm at the match were contagious. It was a festival of food, music, and camaraderie, and I felt privileged to be part of such a beloved tradition.
And then there was Hurricane Ernesto - a force of nature that I experienced for the first time. While the thought of a hurricane might seem terrifying, I felt a sense of calm and trust in the sturdy Bermudian houses. The real beauty, however, was seeing how the community came together in the aftermath. Neighbors helping neighbors, and the spirit of resilience that defined the island, left a lasting impression on me.
Scenic Adventures and Unforgettable Memories
My summer was filled with scenic adventures that will forever be etched in my memory. A boat ride from Dockyard to St. George’s after a day of discovering the reefs is like something out of a dream. The crystal-clear waters, teeming with marine life, were a reminder of the natural beauty that Bermuda has to offer. And no visit to the island would be complete without exploring the Crystal Caves, where the underground world of stalactites and stalagmites felt like stepping into a fantasy.
As I look back on my time at Lili Bermuda, I realize that this summer was more than just an internship - it was an adventure, a learning experience, and a journey of self-discovery. The skills I’ve gained, the people I’ve met, and the memories I’ve made will stay with me long after the scent of Bermuda has faded from my clothes. Just like a well-crafted perfume, this summer was a blend of notes - each one contributing to an unforgettable symphony of experiences.
